When the hint of springtime and warmer weather appears, it is the sign that the simple joys of the season are here again. What better way to usher in the warmer months than some good old-fashioned soft serve?
Hannah’s Soft Serve, located on Reynolds between Hill and Dorr, has only been open for a year, but they have already established themselves as the new hit spot to get your cool cravings.
Not only are they known for their sinfully creamy soft serve, but also their Coney style hot dogs. What puts them apart from other soft serve spots however is the fact that they’ve dipped their toes in providing the always popular bubble teas.
This was my boyfriend’s and mine first time, coming after countless plans to go get ice cream, only to bail on those plans when we made ourselves too full from dinner. I also drive by it every single day on my way to work. So, it was finally time.
Walking up, the building’s structure looked familiar. I found out later why. Turns out Hannah’s used to be a Taco Bell!
I can imagine how convenient a structure like a Taco Bell is to a soft serve spot. There’s already a drive thru, and the front of the building has garage doors that they can close during the winter time and have heat in there.
I also found out later that’s exactly what they did! So while all the other soft serve locations in the area closed for the fall and winter seasons, Hannah’s managed to stay ahead of the game by being open and providing heat in those colder months. Genius.
The indoor/outdoor main area was simple yet nostalgic. Yellow plastic chairs and metal top tables were spaced throughout.
An image of a 50’s roller skate diner girl adorned one of the windows, which I thought was very cute.
An Instagram photo op sign hung on the back wall read Instagram “You Make Me Melt”.
We approached the counter to look at the menu and wow… What a menu!
The titles stood out in bright, blue and pink neon colors against a black background. It really made the menu pop.
I can’t say for sure, but it looks like Hannah’s has the most extensive menu than all other soft serve spots in the area.
So many varieties of toppings, sundaes, doles, malts, sodas, teas, slushies and hot foods. They even had a Dog-Bone Sundae (for dogs, of course) where $.25 of every sundae would be donated to the Toledo Humane Society. I thought that was pretty neat.
Unfortunately, our dog Hershey, who was with us, missed out on it. I promised him next time we would get him one.
Most of the time, I’m a pretty simple girl when it comes to ice cream. In my humble opinion, there’s nothing better than a good old chocolate and vanilla twist. ($2) I always get it in a cup because I find the cone too messy. I already knew it would be delicious, but I’m not exaggerating in saying that it was the richest and creamiest twist I’ve had thus far. An extra bonus was that I got to have a color changing spoon! (Ok, I may or may not have requested this, but the kid in me couldn’t resist.)
My boyfriend got a Peanut Butter Cup Sundae ($4.90) which consisted of vanilla ice cream, hot fudge or peanut butter sauce, and peanut butter cups. It was topped with whipped cream, nuts, and a maraschino cherry. I was low-key jealous of it and may have snuck a few bites. It did not disappoint.
As we sat there enjoying our ice cream, I paid attention to my surroundings. The laughter from a nearby table, the sound of the cars going by, birds chirping, the contented sigh of our dog by our feet, and I realized life was pretty good at that moment. I’m grateful to Hannah’s Soft Serve for playing its part in that.
If you’re in the Toledo area, don’t pass this place up. Get your delicious soft serve and let the deliciousness and the atmosphere erase the stresses of reality for a little while. You deserve it.
