Fun, quirky, and definitely Odd, Odd Fodder in Perrysburg, OH is a one of a kind experience. It’s a casual fast restaurant but it delivers a not so casual dessert.
I’ve heard about this place for quite a while now, and I’ve seen the bright and colorful pictures of the tantalizing shakes and savory chicken sandwiches all over Instagram.
As a person who goes out of her way to obtain photos that are worthy of the gram, it’s a wonder that I didn’t come here sooner. I am finally able to say that I have been to Odd Fodder, and it did not disappoint.
Owned by Scott Bowman, who is also the owner of Fowl and Fodder in downtown Toledo, believes you have to think big when doing any kind of business. He definitely puts his beliefs into action when you get a look at the over the top milkshakes this place offers.
But, I’m getting ahead of myself. On the day I went, I was with a girlfriend who’s always up for my blogging shenanigans. She had been there before, so she knew what we were in for.
Walking in, my first impression was that the seating area was a little dark. The only natural light source came from the front door and windows, but coupling that with dark chairs and tables, a black wall, and a black industrial ceiling, it made for more of a “moody” feel than a bright and cheery one.
Yes, the interior had a few white walls with pops of color, but all the dark absorbed a lot of the light that flows in. The juxtaposition from the bright and eccentric food that Odd Fodder serves, and the atmosphere of the interior was a bit conflicting.
We looked over the menu which was mainly an array of chicken sandwiches and salads. I’ve also heard good things about their Monster Mac, which is like it sounds, a hefty portion of mac n cheese with crispy chicken ($14.99).
My eyes widened with curiosity and anticipation when I read their Odd shake menu.
There was Oreo Churro, Buckeye Brownie, Strawberry Shortcake, Oreo Mud Pie, and Candy Store. All of them sounded like they would put me in a sugar coma, but if that’s the way I go, I can be at peace with that.
If all that sugar seemed too overwhelming, (as it should) there were many different options when it came to their ice cream. There were normal shakes and simpler sundaes, and you could choose from a wide selection of toppings.
After a couple of minutes, I decided on the Spicy Chicken Sandwich Combo ($12.49) and the Strawberry Shortcake Odd Shake. ($10.99) Yes, the prices were a little on the high side, but the shake was a meal in itself and the quality of the sandwich was worth it.
The Spicy Chicken Sandwich was very good and simple, just the way I like it. The chicken was evenly coated with the seasoned breading, however, it wasn’t very spicy. There was a kick, but it added more of a tang than heat. The chicken itself was hot and tender. I loved that after I took a bite, I could see the steam escape. It was between a buttery bun with creamy mayo and two large salty and zesty pickles. It came with flat fries which were cut wide and thin. They were delightfully crispy and also well seasoned.
My friend had ordered the Chicken and Waffles Combo ($13.99) which consisted of crispy chicken between two liege waffles, and topped with cinnamon maple sauce. It looked heavenly but messy. She said it was delicious but wished she had ordered something less sweet since she had also gotten a shake.
Now the Odd Shake (seen in both pictures below because it doesn’t have a bad side!), and the whole reason for coming here, looked like something Willy Wonka himself concocted up. Piled high with ice cream, whipped cream, a Good Humor strawberry shortcake bar, and topped with a generous slice of strawberry cake, it sent my happy soul into the strawberry galaxies and beyond. It was a sensational combination of rich, sweet, creamy, and tart.
Was it a bit much and over the top?
YES. That’s the point and what makes these shakes so much fun. It’s also cool to know that we have shakes like this in the area. These are something that I would expect to find in a big city like LA or New York.
My friend got the Candy Store shake ($10.99) which, believe it or not, had more piled on top of it than my shake did. Layered with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and topped with a waffle cone with whipped cream, a lollipop, an airhead sour strip, mounds of cotton candy and a vanilla cupcake. One look at it and I could practically hear my dentist having a conniption fit.
We seriously underestimated the size of these milkshakes, so if you are planning on getting one of the Odd Shakes, I suggest sharing one or ordering light from the main menu. My friend and I practically rolled out the door. We were satisfied and miserable at the same time, but when it comes to a good restaurant, that’s not a bad thing.
