Domo Sushi Rolls Are A Work of Art On a Plate, And a Symphony of Flavors For The Tongue

Another day, another restaurant review. This time, I took my taste buds to the flavors of Japan for some delicious sushi.

Another day, another restaurant review. This time, I took my taste buds to the flavors of Japan for some delicious sushi.

My friend and I both love sushi, but our significant others do not, so we can only get these small rolls of deliciousness whenever it’s just the two of us.

This time around, my friend decided we should try Domo. Domo is a beautiful restaurant, a picture of modern east-coast design, the wine racks and floor tiles echo one another’s crisp black lines, creating this classy gem that’s tucked away in Somerset Plaza at the corner of McCord and Central.

We walked in, and it being earlier in the afternoon, it was not very busy at all. We were seated promptly and after surveying the menu, we decided just to get an appetizer and a few sushi rolls.

When it comes to rolls, Domo embraces seafood enthusiasts who are willing to adventure beyond  Americanized sushi standards. Domo offers more exotic rolls, like the creamy-with-a-kick burst of flavor Hot & Sexy Roll ($16.95). Or if your wallet can take it, try the High Roller ($35.95) which has Tempura lobster, eel, avocado, egg omelet, & smelt roe topped w/spicy king crab & scallop mix w/flying fish roe on top. My wallet couldn’t handle that, so I moved right the heck along.

Potato Korokke

For our appetizer we decided to get the Potato Korokke ($9.95) which were breaded and deep-fried Japanese mashed potatoes mixed with corn and peas and served with teriyaki sauce. They were piping hot and the filling was creamy and slightly salty. The teriyaki sauce on the side lent a sweet tang to cut through the salt. It was basically a deep-fried pierogi, which I found delightful. You can’t go wrong with fried foods. You just can’t.

The rolls I chose were The Galaxy Roll ($17.95) and The Pink Lady ($17.95).

When my plate came out, it was almost too pretty to eat. It looked like a work of art and topped with rose petals for Valentine’s Day. I personally love when the presentation is thought out and beautiful. Don’t ask me how, but the way the food is presented, can either elevate the dish’s flavor or take it down a couple notches. This presentation, in particular, made me excited.

The Galaxy Roll had Amberjack, salmon, avocado, and smelt roe, topped w/chopped scallops mixed w/teriyaki mayo, melt roe, & scallions. It was an explosion of flavor. Creamy, a little spicy, and a little smoky, melded together into something just awesome. The rice was perfectly cooked and sticky. I just enjoyed every piece.

The Pink Lady was fancy. She was beautiful, she had arrived and she was killing it. She consisted of Tuna, salmon, avocado, smelt roe, crabstick & scallions wrapped w/pink soy paper, and drizzled w/spicy mayo. This roll stood out because of the pink soy paper and the fillings were artistically arranged in bright lattices, reminiscent of a floral bouquet. It looked like it was the sushi of a princess.

Flavor wise, it was very similar to the Galaxy Roll and every bit as delicious. This roll was also slightly bigger and couldn’t be eaten in one bite. So a testament for me to good sushi is that it didn’t crumble apart after taking a bite out of it.

My friend decided on The Puma ($19.95) and a Rainbow Roll ($17.95).

Her plate was also beautiful, though her rolls looked more traditional because she opted not to have mayo drizzled on hers because she doesn’t like to have joy in her life.

Puma and Rainbow Roll.

The Puma consists of Salmon, avocado, smelt roe, scallions & japanese mayo; wrapped with tuna and sea bream; and drizzled w/ teriyaki sauce.

The Rainbow Roll had avocado, & cucumber wrapped with tuna, salmon & white fish.

Domo sushi rolls seem to be more refined than rolls at other places. They take pride in presentation, the flavors are bold and incredibly fresh. Adventurous eaters take note. If the prospect of consuming a piece of art, in a modern and cozy restaurant, while spending quality time with your friend sounds appealing to you, definitely go to Domo.
